Munich, Germany: 24skate #21, June 29 2024
The weather forecast suprised me with a hot and humid day, so I preponed my skating a little bit to avoid the heat a least to some extent. A railway underpath on the direct way to my standard 24skate location was closed, so I had to do a little detour to reach the Oktoberfest area, which some of you may remember from my previous 24skate reports. The area awaited me with suprise number two of that day: A long fence was set up, seemingly cutting of a section of my lap route. Big signs told bikers and walkers to keep off.

Firstly, as a skater I was none of both. Secondly, and more importantly, it only seemed to cut my route. There were still big openings in the fence, which allowed my usual path.

By the way: The fence is to cordon off the area during the constructions works for the Oktoberfest - building the beer tents etc. Luckily these works started only the Monday after the 24skate weekend.
So, the way was also free to "Mother Bavaria", Munich's tiny version of a statue of liberty. She knows me from a few 24skate visits now. Can you see her welcoming smile?

She watched with interest how I did my long circles on the area supervised by her. With her support I managed to achieve almost the same distance in one hour as last year, although I had not had much time for skate training in this season.

After the hour I was happy to find shadowy shelter in the pedestrian walkways around the area.

Did you know that the Oktoberfest is called "Wiesn" by the locals? Wiesn is a Bavarian word for meadow. Parts of the area are still a wild meadow:

Unfortunately some parts of the Wiesn met the fate of many other meadows:

I looked for a public water tap, but could not find one. So I headed back home thirsty, again using the alternative rail underpass, and found out that someone else in its vicinity enjoyed the full-blown sun more than me:

The first lizards I have seen in central Munich!
If you come to Munich for a skate-out with me in the summer, then please remind me to show you that place.
Best regards
Clemens
